Cold Water Tank Cleaning

We often tend to take everyday things for granted and clean tap water is a prime example. We are all well acquainted with leaking taps and burst pipes but probably the last thing that comes to mind when we think of plumbing problems is the actual source of our water and how it is stored. In a perfect world our domestic and commercial cold water storage tanks would never need replacing or cleaning but this is far from being the case.

Importance of Water Tank Cleaning

In most cases the cold water tank is located in an attic or other unused space beneath the roof. Although the water storage tank is usually covered in some manner this is not a totally foolproof method of preventing dust, dirt, insects and small pieces of debris from falling into the water. Over time, limescale will also develop on the inside of the tank which will flake off, enter the water system and can lead to blocked pipes and airlocks.

Water Hygiene

If not serviced and cleaned regularly a cold water tank can become a breeding ground for germs and bacteria. A build-up of sediment, sludge, limescale and dirt in the tank provides ideal conditions for bacteria to flourish including legionella, the bacteria responsible for Legionnaires’ disease. This is why an annual inspection and professional cleaning of cold water tanks is recommended by the health authorities.

Professional Water Tank Cleaning

No 1 PHD has been involved in the inspection, maintenance and cleaning of water storage tanks for a long time and our team of skilled professionals is among the best at what they do! Our tried and tested 4-Step system guarantees the best results with the minimum inconvenience to our customers.

  • Inspection. The tank is thoroughly inspected for dirt, sediment, limescale, debris and foreign objects and also checked for cracks, leaks, signs of wear or rust in the case of metal tanks.
  • Drainage. The water supply is turned off and the taps and toilets connected to the tank run and flushed until the tank is completely drained.
  • Cleaning. Using suitable scrubbing brushes, abrasive tools, descaler and disinfectants, the inside of the tank is thoroughly cleaned paying special attention to the corners, seams, joints and rivets where dirt and germs tend to collect. The tank is then rinsed thoroughly with clean water.
  • Refill. Refilling the tank must be carefully done to avoid any dirt or debris accidentally falling into the tank. The cleaned lid is then replaced and checked that it sits securely in place.

Cleaning a cold water storage tank may seem like a simple task but to do it properly and effectively requires experience, patience and the right equipment. Simply emptying the tank and giving it a quick wipe down will not suffice and may, in fact, cause more problems than it fixes.

Related Plumbing Damage

Whether your cold water storage tank is for residential or commercial use it is crucial to have it well maintained and regularly serviced. Of course, should problem pipework or unsatisfactory water pressure be of concern No 1 PHD is just a phone call or an email away!

Old or New Water Tanks

After noticing that the house was unusually cold, we found that the heating wasn’t coming on and that our hot water had also failed. We called the team at No 1 PHD who dispatched an engineer to investigate. After discovering that the culprit was a faulty boiler part, they ordered in a new part and got it fitted as quickly as possible. The guys were great, and we couldn’t be happier.

Mr Lincoln

For days, we’ve noticed a foul smell coming from outside and a gurgling sound coming from one of the drains. Whenever it would rain, the area around it would flood slightly and take ages to drain. We tried buying drain unblockers, but none seemed effective. Eventually, we turned to No 1 PHD and were left wondering why we didn’t do this sooner.
