Burst Plumbing Pipes Repaired in Portsmouth

Life sometimes likes to throw curveballs, and one of the little problems that sometimes results from these unexpected moments of difficulty is a burst water pipe. It can be overwhelming to suddenly see your safe haven, your home, suddenly awash with water, but rest assured, there are steps you can take to minimise the damage incurred by a burst pipe, and we, at No1PHD have expert plumbers, right here in Portsmouth, able to get your burst pipe sorted out and your water system restored so you can get on with your busy life once again.

What causes burst pipes?

The most common cause of burst pipes is from the pipes freezing during a cold spell. The water inside the pipes freezes, which causes it to expand inside the pipe, breaking through at weak points, joins and finding any weaknesses in the metal or plastic. Portsmouth tends to enjoy very mild weather most of the time, but they can happen, and a cold spell is not the only time when a pipe might burst, there are other causes too.

Interferences in the water pressure inside the pipe can have an effect on the integrity of the pipe. This means that blockages at certain points of the system can build up water pressure or air pressure, or they can be the cause of the water or air pressure being too low, creating an almost vacuum effect inside the pipe. These pressure changes can weaken the pipe, or have an effect on existing joins or bends in the pipe, making it easier for the pressure to cause a break in the pipe.

Over time, many water pipes will suffer from ageing and wear and tear that leaves them weak and subject to sudden failure. Where possible, keep an eye on the structure of your home, and if any pipes look like they might be getting old or frail, then give our No1PHD plumbing experts a call to come and check them out to put your mind at ease. If your home has been the subject of some renovations or even a car accident, it is possible that your pipes have suffered hidden damage from hammering or other building work, or from the impact of the car hitting, for example, an outside wall. If you think that your home or building might have been subject to any similar sort of impact, it is best to have someone give your plumbing system a quick check before any weaknesses announce themselves in the form of a burst pipe!

What can I do about a burst pipe?

  • Immediately turn the water off. This may be a little too late if you are googling as water soaks its way through your home, but if not: find out where your water mains are as soon as possible, and learn how to turn it off quickly. Turning the water supply off will limit the water gushing out all over your home and can make the difference between just one ruined carpet and all your possessions on the ground floor needing to be replaced.
  • Turn on a tap or two. This will help to drain the pipes of any water already in the system, and will hopefully do it in such a way that the water runs away down the drain rather than by escaping through the break in the pipe.
  • Locate the break. If the pipe runs underground, or beneath floor boards, you will not be able to very precisely locate the problem, but you will be able to get pretty close, which will allow you to begin mop-up operations.
  • Call the cavalry! Portsmouth’s finest plumbers, No1PHD, are just waiting for your call, and we can respond promptly to emergency call-outs, arriving to repair or replace the burst pipe, restore your water flow, and get your life back on track as soon as possible.

A burst pipe is usually quite unmistakeable, and if you suddenly develop a leak, find a large unexplained puddle somewhere along the plumbing system or have reason to suspect that you have a burst pipe, call or get in touch with us, No1PHD in Portsmouth today, on 08006906777

After noticing that the house was unusually cold, we found that the heating wasn’t coming on and that our hot water had also failed. We called the team at No 1 PHD who dispatched an engineer to investigate. After discovering that the culprit was a faulty boiler part, they ordered in a new part and got it fitted as quickly as possible. The guys were great, and we couldn’t be happier.

For days, we’ve noticed a foul smell coming from outside and a gurgling sound coming from one of the drains. Whenever it would rain, the area around it would flood slightly and take ages to drain. We tried buying drain unblockers, but none seemed effective. Eventually, we turned to No 1 PHD and were left wondering why we didn’t do this sooner.
