Gas Testing and Certificates

It is a criminal act in the UK to install and work with gas appliances without a valid gas safety certificate. The certificate is a confirmation that all gas equipment installed in your premises has met the required safety precautions and is not hazardous to workers. At No1PHD, we install, inspect and provide gas safety certificates to all businesses that have met the basic safety regulations on the use of gas. Where there is an issue, we will fix it immediately and train your teams on how to use gas equipment efficiently.

Why is it Important?

Around 30 workers die each year in the United Kingdom as a result of poorly maintained gas appliances. The most common causes of death are usually carbon monoxide poisoning and fires. In 1998, The Gas Safety Regulations were passed that imposed responsibilities on people in charge of gas systems at the workplace, to ensure that these appliances were fit for use at any time.

It is the responsibility of the employer or building management company to ensure regular inspection and servicing of heaters, boilers and any other gas-burning equipment. These appliances should also be serviced as per manufacturers’ specifications.

What If I Do Not Have a Gas Safety Certificate?

It is not worth risking the absence of a gas safety certificate. Apart from the fines and penalties that come with not having one, there is a potential risk to life or injury from faulty equipment. This could lead to imprisonment, loss of business and hefty fines if found guilty. In cases of death, business owners may face manslaughter charges. Insurance companies may fail to compensate a business that is burned down due to poor maintenance of the gas appliances.

What is the Cost for Getting the Certificate?

The cost of getting a gas safety certificate depends on the number and type of gas appliances. We give a quote based on what you have at the premises. However, the best time to get the certificate for the next full year is during your annual appliance maintenance. At the time, you will have the equipment such as heaters and boilers inspected and fixed at the standard cost. The certificate issued after the maintenance work has been completed.

What are the Procedures for Getting a Gas Safety Certificate?

You can only get a gas safe certificate from as Gas safe registered technicians. No1PHD are registered Gas Safe engineers. Therefore, our certificate is recognised by the relevant government inspectorate organisations.

Here are the procedures for getting the certificate.

If you would like to have the certificate, contact us today for a quote and premise visit. We shall send our technicians to your premises to inspect and carry out relevant tests on your system. If any of the appliances use an extraction method to get rid of gasses released in the combustion process, we shall also test the extraction method to ensure that it meets the minimum requirements.

After inspection, we shall prepare a report of the findings and recommend courses of action to ensure compliance. Many of our customers use us for gas equipment repairs and fixing according to the information on our report. Once these recommendations are met, we shall provide a gas safety certificate. Any new appliances that are introduced into your business premises require testing before they can be validated as safe for the workers. The gas safety certificate is offered within 28 days after the check-up.

Apart from the certificate, each of the gas appliances will have a safety record. The record will have the following items.

  • The date when the particular gas equipment was checked
  • Any defect that was noticed during the inspection and actions taken to fix the problem
  • The name signature and the registration details of the engineer who carried out the inspection and the fixing of issues
  • A confirmation that all gas checks were carried and the outcome of the inspection exercise
  • The name and address of the individual who is in charge of the gas equipment
  • The address of the property where the gas appliance has been installed

After noticing that the house was unusually cold, we found that the heating wasn’t coming on and that our hot water had also failed. We called the team at No 1 PHD who dispatched an engineer to investigate. After discovering that the culprit was a faulty boiler part, they ordered in a new part and got it fitted as quickly as possible. The guys were great, and we couldn’t be happier.

For days, we’ve noticed a foul smell coming from outside and a gurgling sound coming from one of the drains. Whenever it would rain, the area around it would flood slightly and take ages to drain. We tried buying drain unblockers, but none seemed effective. Eventually, we turned to No 1 PHD and were left wondering why we didn’t do this sooner.
