Immersion Heaters

Despite a move away from immersion heaters in the home, they are still popular in some situations, such as where a gas boiler is not practical or even possible. No1PHD can offer both installation and repair services, ensuring that your home has hot water when it is needed.

What is an Immersion Heater

Unlike a gas boiler, which heats water as it moves through the boiler system itself, an immersion heater is essentially a large kettle. A tank of water is fitted with an electric heater which is then immersed in the water. That water, once warm, can be used in the home. It is common practice (and thoroughly recommended) to insulate the water tank to save costs. No1PHD will ensure your water tank and all related plumbing and heating pipes are insulated to maximize efficiency.

Why Don’t all Homes Have Immersion Heaters?

The obvious downside to this system is efficiency; running what is ostensibly an enormous kettle can quickly run up your electricity bill. That’s why most immersion heaters are only run at certain times during the day when hot water is needed. It is also possible to fit an immersion heater timer to automate this process, which is useful as the water can take a while to heat up.

Do Immersion Heaters Work with Central Heating?

Unfortunately no. Central heating is a closed-loop of hot water that is pumped around the home. Immersion heater tanks feed hot water directly into your taps and showers, and so cannot run that closed-loop kind of system. It would also not be an efficient use of the heater, as it relies on being able to slowly bring water up to temperature to keep energy usage down.

When is an Immersion Heater the Right Choice?

The most obvious factor that can lead to an immersion heater being the right choice for a home is the lack of a gas supply, which is needed to run a standard boiler. It is also not uncommon to have an immersion heater alongside a boiler as backup. It can help to speak to an expert, and No1PHD would be happy to take your call if you wish to discuss the pros and cons of moving to (or away from) this kind of system.

Can Immersion Heaters be Made More Efficient?

First and foremost, high-quality insulation can greatly improve the efficiency of an immersion heater. Keeping the heat from escaping your water tank means you do not need the heater to be running for as long to bring the water up to temperature. And if the heater is turned off for periods of times, decent insulation can keep the water warmer for longer, ensuring you still have hot water even after the heater is turned off. It also helps to manage your hot water usage; if you completely empty your water tank, it will take longer and use more energy to reheat.

Immersion Heaters with Thermostats

Thermostats are a way of automatically switching your heater on and off depending on the temperature of the water. Combined with high-quality insulation, a thermostat can really make the most cost-effective use of your immersion heater system. Another option to consider is an immersion heater timer. This allows you to set times where you know you won’t need hot water, and it can be automatically turned off during those periods. If you’re thinking of getting an immersion heater fitted and would like a thermostat-controlled system, we can meet your needs.

The Benefits of Immersion Heaters

  • Do not require a gas line connection
  • Can be very energy efficient when combined with a thermostat and good insulation
  • Can serve as a backup system in the event of boiler failure
  • Can be fitted with a timer and programmed to suit your routine

After noticing that the house was unusually cold, we found that the heating wasn’t coming on and that our hot water had also failed. We called the team at No 1 PHD who dispatched an engineer to investigate. After discovering that the culprit was a faulty boiler part, they ordered in a new part and got it fitted as quickly as possible. The guys were great, and we couldn’t be happier.

For days, we’ve noticed a foul smell coming from outside and a gurgling sound coming from one of the drains. Whenever it would rain, the area around it would flood slightly and take ages to drain. We tried buying drain unblockers, but none seemed effective. Eventually, we turned to No 1 PHD and were left wondering why we didn’t do this sooner.
